Development Updates
The GOC Middle Grades Development Team will be meeting regularly throughout the 2011-2012 school year. The focus of these meetings will be on developing and implementing the organizational and instructional models that will be the foundation for grades 6-8. Educational research is guiding every decision and will be the backbone of this program. Full-time students enrolled in the GOC middle grades will be able to take language arts, math, science, social studies, foreign language, and a variety of connections classes unique to the online environment. The Middle Grades demo course is now available for your review! You can access this course by clicking here. We hope that you will be as excited as we are about the web 2.0 tools, interactivity, and rigor evident in each course. Please keep in mind that the lessons are not designed to stand alone; a qualified teacher will guide students as they work through the lessons. As you are looking around the demo course, please remember that registration is going on now. Parents and students who are interested in attending GOC for the 2012-2013 school year must submit an Intent to Register Form before March 15.

The Middle Grades Development Team has been hard at work developing rich, engaging lessons to be implemented in the online courses. People who are interested in catching a glimpse into the middle grades experience will be able to view the demo course, complete with sample lessons and activities. This course is intended to showcase all aspects of the middle grades; lessons ranging from language arts to math, grades 6 to 8 will be available. Additionally, the demo course will provide a preview into the connections offerings at Gwinnett Online Campus, including (but not limited to) digital photography, science enrichment, and healthy lifestyles. This course will be available in the coming days, so check back frequently!

Thank you to the many individuals who have signed up to participate in the Desire 2 Learn training course that begins January 9. Individuals who are interested in implementing courses with GOC in the future are encouraged to take this 4-week Desire 2 Learn training course that will be offered once more beginning on January 23. There will be a limited number of spots available for this course; teachers who are interested in this opportunity should contact Marisa Kana by January 13 for more information. The middle grades demo course will also be available on our website in the coming weeks, be sure to check the middle grades website frequently for updates.

This is an exciting time for Gwinnett Online Campus’s middle grades. Development Team members have been training vigorously to prepare for the course implementation, which will soon be underway. We are excited to announce that development of the organizational and instructional models is nearly complete! These interactive models present the educational research that has been guiding every decision made by the Middle Grades Development Team; they will be available online in the coming weeks and they will be presented at the informational cluster meetings beginning in early November (for a complete list of the meeting dates and locations, click here). In addition to developing the organizational and instructional models, the Development Team has also been working on the course format and components. Students enrolled in GOC’s Middle Grades courses will receive an engaging, relevant, and meaningful learning experience supported by the best instructional practices. The Middle Grades Development Team met for an all-day conference of learning and collaboration, and we are pleased to announce that we have formed two sub-committees to begin the creation of the organizational and instructional models. Research is guiding every decision, and collaboration is in high effect. The GOC Middle Grades Development Team truly is an innovative group of educators; the organizational and instructional models will be presented on the website as soon as they become available.

Development for GOC middle grades is now underway. The development team has met following their empowerment from the Board of Trustees and is excited to begin working on the instructional model; grades 6-8 at GOC will be unlike any other online program in the nation. This first informational meeting was a wonderful chance for all of the team members to come together and begin forming a common vision for GOC middle grades: To create world-class middle school courses designed to meet student needs by providing engaging, individualized instruction utilizing innovative technology and face to face interaction with teachers who know their students personally.
